Listening to That Gut Feeling

Since we’ve discussed how to handle decision making through strategy, I think it’s about time we dive into how we can use our intuition in this process. I wish that listening to your gut was a clear step-by-step process that I could offer you, but unfortunately, it isn’t that simple to navigate. I’m sure you’ve been at a crossroads before with a big opportunity in front of you. It can feel debilitating, even paralyzing. It would be ideal if you could just think, meditate, or journal and the plan would be clear, but more times than not, it takes some nurturing and practice.

When we are in something, we often want to know the why right away. So when I was offered what I thought was my dream to join as an affiliate for Marie Forleo’s B-School, why was I sensing it wasn’t the right timing? Why did I feel pulled to say no to something that I wanted? Ladies, there is usually a reason. We don’t always see it immediately, but usually it becomes clear with time. Within weeks of B-School launching, I found out I was pregnant again (my first was just nine months at that time!). Not only was I going to be birthing a baby, but I also was about to birth this book. By saying not yet to B-School, I had left space and bandwidth for my current season of life. If I had acted on that special launch opportunity because of a fear of missing out, it wouldn’t have been a great thing. This allowed me to fully enjoy the wondrous things in that current life season, and who knows, maybe I’ll still become a B-School affiliate in the future.

How did I have the confidence to say no? Here are some tangible takeaways and tips when you’re seeking clarity and discernment:

Keep this affirmation in your back pocket: I trust that I’ll have the discernment to make a confident and aligned decision.

Talk to people who know you for accountability.

Do your pros and cons list. You can snag this worksheet back in Lie #2.

Give yourself time and space—time to mull it over and space to think about other things so it’s not all-consuming. Make sure that you don’t overload yourself with noise so that you can honor the time and space.

Remind yourself that even if you make the “wrong” decision (never a wrong one, just a not-as-right one!), you will never be too far in to make the decision to back out. This always takes a huge amount of pressure off.

Finally, get quiet with yourself and imagine the outcome. If you were to say yes, would you have a pit of doubt in your stomach? If you were to say no, would you have a pit of doubt in your stomach? This was probably the step that brought the most clarity in my situation.
